Lesson Plan

Objectives:
Students will participate in discussion of characteristics of seasons.
Students will understand what colors would portray each season.
Students will be able to create designs and patterns in colors that represent each of the four seasons.
Assessment:
Does the student understand the relationship between colors and seasons?
Did the student complete four “leaves” representing each of the four seasons?

 

Materials Needed:
  • Watercolor paper (try Reeves 35 sheet)
  • 13 Water color sets (Crayola)
  • 24 hair brushes size 6 (small ish) (Charles Lenerd brand, carries 12 pk.)
  • Brown butcher paper cut into the shape of a tree trunk and four large branches
  • Templates for leafs/blossums/snowflakes
  • Scissors
  • Paper towels
  • Salt
  • Leaves to stamp
  • Plastic or paper cups filled with water for each student

Lesson Sequence:

5 min: Discussion of characteristics of seasons. Compare and contrast. Talk about what time of the year each season occurs.
5 min: Have them imagining each individual season with their eyes closed.  Have them picture themselves in a forest of trees during each season. Ask them what colors they see and record those colors for each season.
10 min: Set up materials for activity:
Give each child 4 small pieces of water color paper.
Lay out templates on the table to share. Have each child choose a template for each season and cut out that shape in their watercolor paper.
Have children share watercolor sets between themselves and instruct them on how to use them.
5 min: demo different water color techniques. (show them how to dip their brush in water to get more saturated colors, explain how to use salt, paper towels and leaves to create unique designs
35 min:
Free Art time to make 4 season leaves. They can create designs with the water colors or use any of the extra materials.

Hang up leaves on tree. Brown butcher paper will be cut into a trunk and 4 big branches (you can label them for each season). Students will put their Spring leaves all together, Summer leaves together, etc.
Tree can be displayed in class or hallway
