Learning
Objectives:
Students will spend 20 minutes observing apples and participating in
discussions about their observations of color, shape, and texture.
Students will use pastels to create drawings of 3-5 apples. They will
use horizon lines, perspective, and observation.
Assessment:
Students will have a completed project with a drawing of 3-5 apples
that are spatially appropriate. They will have multiple colors, representing
their ability to observe shapes in colors.

Materials
Needed:
9X17 gray construction paper oil pastels for whole class drawing pencils apples (one per student) with varying colors and shapes and sizes center table material for still life Poster prints of Cezanne and Matisse apple still life |
Lesson Sequence:
5 min: Mrs. Ackley will instruct the students about the Life Cycle of
an apple.
5 min: Observations of apples- spread apples on tables and ask
students to share what they observe. Colors, shapes, compare & contrast
5 min: Art History- Share still-life paintings from Matisse and
Cezanne. Have children look at shapes and colors in paintings. Compare and
contrast.
5 min. Have children each take one apple and use fingers to trace
shapes on the apples to find colors and shapes of edges. Lead discussion by
asking observation questions:
-What shapes do you feel/see?
-How does the surface feel?
-What words could describe the apple?
-What colors do you see?
2 min: demonstration of horizon lines, contour drawings.
Have children begin by drawing horizon line with you , and then
looking at the still life closest to them to draw the contour of the
different shapes of apples. They draw from the still life that is closest to
them. They may pick 3-5 apples to focus on.
10 min: pencil drawings of apple edges.
*Make sure students understand: perspective (close apples are lower on
page, far apples are higher), horizon lines, relative sizes of apples (crab
apples vs. large full apples need to be different sizes)
Pass out oil pastels, using the color pallet found in the apples.
2 min: demo of finding shapes in the colors of the apples.
20 min: time to draw with pastels and see different shapes of colors.
*Make sure students understand: coloring of shapes, finding different
shapes, color overlapping, etc.
